Convert kilowatts (kW) to amps (A) for single-phase and three-phase electrical loads. Enter the power, voltage, phase, and power factor for an accurate current calculation.
For three-phase: Amps = kW × 1000 ÷ (V × √3 × PF). For single-phase: Amps = kW × 1000 ÷ (V × PF). The power factor (PF) is typically 0.8–0.95 for HVAC equipment.
This calculation is essential for sizing cables, circuit breakers, and isolators for HVAC equipment. Always check the equipment's nameplate for the rated current and power factor.
10 kW at 400V three-phase with PF 0.85 = approximately 17.0 amps per phase. The formula is: A = 10,000 ÷ (400 × 1.732 × 0.85).
For HVAC equipment, use 0.85 as a default. Inverter drives may have PF of 0.95+. Resistive loads (heaters) have PF of 1.0. Check the equipment nameplate.
