Calculate the required VRF/VRV outdoor unit capacity based on total indoor unit capacity and a diversity factor. VRF systems allow the outdoor unit to be smaller than the sum of indoor units.
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) and VRV (Daikin's brand name for VRF) systems allow the outdoor unit to be sized smaller than the total indoor unit capacity because not all zones peak simultaneously. This is called the diversity factor.
Typical diversity factors are 0.7–0.9 for office buildings (not all zones peak at once) and 1.0 for applications where all zones may peak simultaneously. Always check the manufacturer's maximum connection ratio (indoor/outdoor capacity).
Most VRF manufacturers allow a maximum indoor/outdoor capacity ratio of 130% (diversity factor of 0.77). Some systems allow up to 150%. Check the manufacturer's specifications.
Offices: 0.7–0.85. Hotels: 0.8–0.9. Residential: 0.9–1.0. Server rooms: 1.0 (all zones peak simultaneously). Always confirm with the manufacturer.
