Calculate the cooling capacity of an AHU or FCU cooling coil from the airflow and entering/leaving air temperatures. Get results in kW and BTU/hr.
Cooling coil capacity is calculated as: Q (kW) = 1.2 × Airflow (m³/h) × ΔT (°C) / 3600, where 1.2 is the volumetric heat capacity of air (kJ/m³K).
This gives the sensible cooling capacity. Total capacity (including latent) is higher and depends on the dehumidification occurring as air passes through the coil.
Sensible capacity is the temperature reduction. Total capacity includes latent capacity (moisture removal). Total = sensible ÷ SHR (Sensible Heat Ratio), typically 0.7–0.9.
Cooling coils typically produce a 8–12°C temperature drop across the coil. A 24°C entering air with 14°C leaving air gives a 10°C drop.
