The short answer
VRF means variable refrigerant flow. VRV means variable refrigerant volume and is a Daikin trademark. The terms refer to the same general technology, not two fundamentally different cooling methods. Individual product ranges still differ in controls, refrigerant, capacity, compatibility and system design.

How the technology is used
These systems vary refrigerant flow to respond to the demand from connected indoor units. They can serve multiple zones in a building. The actual number and types of indoor units, permitted combinations and pipework limitations are specific to the product range; a general description is not a design specification.
Heat pump and heat recovery are separate choices
Do not infer simultaneous heating and cooling from the VRF or VRV label alone. Check whether the specified system is a heat-pump or heat-recovery arrangement, and what the actual product documentation allows. Controls, branch arrangements and commissioning requirements must match the design.
Questions for the designer or installer
Start with room-by-room loads, operating schedules and access for maintenance. Compare an engineered selection rather than just an outdoor-unit price.
- Exact indoor/outdoor model combinations and control architecture.
- Capacity at the relevant design conditions.
- Refrigerant selection, pipe limits and room-specific safety assessment.
- Electrical supply, maintenance access and commissioning records.
Existing systems and replacement parts
Indoor units, controls and branch components should not be treated as interchangeable between manufacturers or generations. Identify the full system and use verified manufacturer compatibility information. A matching capacity or connector is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Related questions
Is VRV different technology from VRF?
Daikin states that the two terms refer to the same technology; VRV is its trademark. Compare actual product ranges and engineered requirements, rather than choosing by the terminology alone.
Can I mix indoor units from different brands?
Do not assume compatibility. Obtain written model-specific confirmation from the manufacturer or a suitably experienced designer before selecting components.
